Working in an auto service center performing safety/emissions tests on vehicles


Must have a current State Inspection/Emissions license/certification


Serves as emissions inspector performing emission inspection functions in all test positions. Directs motorists in and out of the inspection station. Inspects vehicles for conditions affecting safety and exhaust system integrity. Follows established emission inspection procedures in testing vehicles.

Receives specific assignments from the supervisor relative to inspection position to be worked and any special instructions needed. Performs assigned tasks obtaining assistance as required for unusual or difficult problems encountered. Work is reviewed in terms of ability to complete emission inspections within established time limits, follow proper test procedures, and ability to deal effectively with the public, and complete other assigned tasks.

Responsible for collecting inspection fees and accounting for the proper dollar amount collected in vouchers. Enters appropriate vehicle information into computer and verifies vehicle data against computer data. Operates exhaust analysis instrumentation (dynamometer). Operates vehicles during the emissions and evaporative system test. Provides test results to customers and explains the printout as necessary.

Instructs customers on the next step in the inspections process after test is completed. Collects documents from customers relative to inspection re-tests. Maintains proper custodial control of emission inspection stickers. Refers questions or comments to appropriate individuals. Performs other duties as assigned such as janitorial, lawn maintenance, and other facility care tasks as required.



Job Requirements

Education/Experience/Abilities/Requirements:
Must have ability to maintain accuracy of inspections and excellent customer service skills while working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Ability to understand and identify selected emission control devices.
Light typing skills.
Must have reliable transportation.
Must be 18 years of age.
Valid state driver’s license with a good driving record.
